What is the Circularity Deck?

The Circularity Deck is a research-based, playful card-deck tool designed to help innovators, managers, educators, students and entrepreneurs analyse, ideate, and develop circular economy strategies. Often in the context of achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The physical Box triggers creativity around circular economy thinking and collaboration in teams. It provides a practical, structured framework for shifting from a linear to a circular economy.

The main purpose and function of the Deck can be broken down into three segments.

  • Ideation & Innovation: The deck helps teams brainstorm, visualize, and implement circular business models, products, and ecosystem strategies.

  • Shared Language: It provides a common language and set of principles for teams to align on, helping bridge the gap between abstract sustainability concepts and practical application.

  • Tool for Action: It functions as a checklist to identify gaps in current strategies, offering 50+ principles to improve resource efficiency, minimise waste and more.

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Circularity Deck contributes towards the following SDGs:

The Circularity Deck was developed by Jan Konietzko during his PhD research at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Its purpose is to help managers, entrepreneurs and educators learn, design and innovate for a circular economy. The Deck has sold more than 1000 copies and has been translated into multiple languages, including Japanese and Spanish. It is now available as a second edition (2025) to continue the journey and keep the power of circularity alive.
